Mercedez Rex Designs (Booth R-3)

Mercedez Rex at Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

Artist Statement:

“I am a visual artist who explores surface design through water marbling and textile dyeing. When dyeing, I work with both natural and fiber reactive dyes, employing a range of techniques. From the more traditional shibori and iconic tie-dye, to the less conventional and relatively new ice-dye process, which involves applying powdered dyes directly to fabric and selectively introducing water (often in the form of ice) to draw out color in specific areas. Marbling is my latest obsession, I began experimenting with the practice in early 2018, and was immediately hooked. Water marbling is a centuries old mono printing process that involves floating pigments on the surface of naturally treated water to create dynamic patterns which can then be transferred onto porous materials such as fabric, leather or paper. Shortly after learning the basics I felt inspired to share the art form with the Austin community and began teaching workshops and doing live demonstrations at markets around town.”
